Did you find yourself sitting at home itching to wrestle this past weekend? For team Fauquier that was almost the case. On Friday as the team prepared to compete in the District Duals the next day (Saturday) at Kettle Run HS the news came out that this six team dual event was cancelled. Fauquier was subjected to this type of cancelation a few weeks ago when they were slated to attend the Mayhem at Millbrook where they also were told by Fauquier County that all activities were cancelled.

Knowing that a snow storm had left schools closing throughout the region all last week loomed in the back of the mind of Coach Fisher that this District Duals event also would be in danger of getting cancelled. This possible risk made Coach Fisher scramble to find an alternate event for his wrestling team. As the Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge hosted by Colonial Forge HS presented an opening for team Fauquier, Coach Fisher pounced on this meet change to keep the Falcons fresh and competing with others around the state.

In fact the switching of events may have turned out be a good move by Coach Fisher as team Fauquier would be up against some of the best wrestling programs in Northern Virginia and the Va. Beach area. Not to knock any of the District foe teams but come-on, when given the opportunity to wrestle Colonial Forge, Mountain View, Grassfield, Lake Braddock, Buckhannon-Upshur (WVA), oh yeah and let’s not forget about Great Bridge and Poquoson HS, this becomes a hot bed for the best wrestling in the state of Virginia. For the record that’s seven ranked wrestling programs and I would argue with anyone that the Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge would be the best event in the state this weekend.

What type of tournament was the USMC? This was not your normal traditional wrestling tournament as all wrestlers were grouped into four pools and wrestlers competed in two matches in a three round-robin format. Based on their record in these opening preliminary rounds wrestlers were then re-seeded and placed into an eight-man bracket. If wrestlers won the opening quarter’s matches they would advance into the semi-finals and would then place top four automatically. If they lost their first round match then wresters would wrestle in the consolations bouts-placing fifth through eighth. The Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge gave all teams and wrestlers at least five matches. The Fauquier wrestling team also had participated in the Elite Opener during the beginning of the season which had a similar wrestling format and the team finished 3rd in that event.

So how did team Fauquier do at the USMC Challenge? Colonial Forge HS, the number two ranked team in the state, stepped into the ring and had the lead the entire way through the tournament. The real challenge was with four other teams battling for the second and third place trophy. As team Fauquier bounced between second and fourth place during this event, at day’s end the Falcons would end up in fourth eleven points out from third place. Keeping stride and showing other teams that team Fauquier would step on the mat and battle a six minute match with anyone, this team should be proud. In addition, with having a full line-up there could have been a difference in the final team placement which very well could have come down to one match or one additional wrestler.

The Individual results? Team Fauquier had three first place winners, one second, third, fourth, and a sixth placer. Three other wrestlers placed between 6th and 8th place.

Daniel Ariola at 113 lb weight class took a 1st place with a 3-0 win over Darius Wiles of Lake Braddock. But an even closer match was in the semi-finals where Daniel was losing by one point to Brandon Tenney of Buckhannon-Upshur (WVA) heading in to the 3rd period. Daniel scored a last second take down to win the match 2-1 in a very tight match. Daniel went 5-0 and currently has a 31-3 season record for the year.

Kyle Roche at 126 lb weight class won a major decision (10-1) over Bobby Ziehfreund from Osbourn. Kyle controlled the whole match providing him with the first place medal and standing on top of the podium at day’s end. Kyle also had won his semi-final match over Jamond Copeland of Grassfield 9-2. This was a rematch that occurred two weeks earlier while at the Virginia Duals where Kyle suffered a loss to Jamond. Kyle currently rests with a season record of 25-8.

This final champion for team Fauquier was 145 lb Garrett Tingen who won a 10-4 decision over Curtis Harris of Colonial Forge in the finals. This was a high level match in which Garrett had taken Curtis to his back twice as the final score really did not dictate how Tingen showed his dominance in this match. Twice Garrett was able to take Curtis to his back with a pinning combination as the head referee had to stop the match both times. Garrett recorded 4 pins for the day as he was second with most pins in the fewest amount of time. Garrett Tingen now stands at 30-4 season record.

Other notable performances came from Matt Raines as he also was a finalist and posted 4-1 record for the day. Matt won his Semi-Finals match over Trevor Watkins of Mountain View by a fall in the 3rd period. Suffering a 6-5 loss to Jeff Stone of Colonial Forge this was a match that also came right down to the last seconds of the match as Matt could not score a takedown for the win. Matt also earned four pins for the day and aided with the team success. Matt Raines’s season record currently stands at 30-4.

What’s Next? As team Fauquier earns a fourth place finish at the Ultimate Challenge their exposure to this type of competition will only improve their game as the team gets ready for the post season Conference-which is only two weeks away. Fauquier will have an away tri-meet this Wednesday at Robinson HS and then they will travel to Forest Park HS for a Quad meet that will end their regular season play.

Q: Having the District Duals cancelled and being able to re-direct the team to the Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge Tournament, are you satisfied with this event and able get the squad some matches?
Coach Fisher: Yes, I was excited to find out that we were able to slip into the tournament. Having missed on weekend already because of weather, we could not afford another. As it turned out, it was a better event for us anyway.

Q: Daniel Ariola, Kyle Roche, and Garrett Tingen really looked good on the mat. Any insight on how they can improve their game to make an impact on the state tournament?
Coach Fisher: You have to believe they are going to be in the hunt for a state title. They certainly are. Daniel continues to improve on very specific areas of his game. He is becoming a very consistent wrestler in all areas of the game. Kyle has really come on the last couple weeks, and is wrestling the best tournament I’ve seen him wrestle week after week. Garrett continues to look to pin his opponent from anywhere and in any position, and usually does. We are working on a plethora of new things with him, and he will become even more dangerous.

Q: Team Fauquier just competed with the number two team in the state this past weekend (Colonial Forge HS) and will have a tri-match this Wednesday verses the number one ranked team in the state (Robinson HS). Could your wrestling schedule be one of the hardest 4A schedules in the state of Virginia if not all classifications? Any comment?
Coach Fisher: Not sure if that is the case, but we do pack the schedule with plenty of challenges. I believe if we compete successfully against the best teams regardless of State or Classification, our VA 4A State tournament will seem average by comparison.

Q: What does team Fauquier need to do to prepare for the post season play?
Coach Fisher: We need to pick up our pace in practice and stay focused on our goals.
