In-Depth look at the 2020 4A State Championships
Tuscarora High School, Leesburg, VA

If you recall last year the VHSL had the 4A State Championships at two different sites. The 2020 State Championships will not have two sites but rather one location: Tuscarora High School, Leesburg, VA

The 2020 State Championships will be a 2-Day event which will feature each weight class running a 16-Man bracket. The 4A States is made up of four Regions (A, B, C, and D) and at each weight class, each Region qualified four wrestlers which makes-up the 16-man field.

With four Regions, the State brackets will have four number 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds as the number 1 and 4 seeds will be pairs up together and the 2 and 3 seeds respectively ALL having bouts during the first round of States.

If you are looking to come, come earlier and make sure you get a seat. The past few years the State Championship have been a packed house.

The table above shows the top schools in each Region with the most State participants from those Regions (A, B, C, D).

Jefferson Forest may have advanced the most wrestlers from their respective D Region which is based on having the smallest Region of eight schools. As a further review of the Region D, many of those Region 8-man brackets were filled with only five to six wrestlers allowing many schools from this region to push through large number of participants.

Whereas, Region A, B, and C are compressed of 13 to 15 schools with a much stronger field to drawing from. It’s no question that Region D will have a few good wrestlers but the depth of talent in Region A, B, and C will be evident.

Of the four top teams entering the States Championships Great Bridge, Eastern View, and Fauquier have the most ranked wrestlers.

Of Region A, B, and C, Great Bridge has the most number one and two seeds with 8, Fauquier has 7, and Eastern View has 4 to complete the field.

With Great Bridge having the highest number of top seeds do not be surprised to the Wildcats control the leader board after the first round of wrestling on Friday.

For team Fauquier, all wrestlers will have a 10AM first-round bout. Fauquier have been aligned with six number one seeds, a single two seed, and a third and fourth seed. Based on how teams finished up at the Regions, wrestlers will carry that same placement over to the 16-Man State bracket.

The Wrestlers:
(120) Reece Kuhns, (126) DJ Richards (138) Gino Camarca, (160) Eric Dewald, (170) David Dewald, (182) Sam Fisher, (195) Benjamin Bell, (220) Thomas Heisler, and (285) Casey Burr.

Keep an eye on:
Sam Fisher, a Senior and career record 167-24. Fisher is a 4-time District Champ and 4-time Region Champ and a 3-time 4A VA State Champion. Sam will be wrestling to become the first 4-time Fauquier County State Champion.

Gino Camarca, a Senior and a 2-time District Champion. He finished third place finish in the Region in 2019, a second-place finish at Regions in 2018 and won the 138 lbs Region last week. Camarca also is a 2x State placer (5th place in 2018 and 6th place 2019).

DJ Richards, Eric Dewald, Benjamin Bell, Thomas Heisler all are seeded 1 respectively as Casey Burr has a 2 seed and all are State Qualifiers in years past.

Question for Coach Fisher:
Q: The Falcons went 6 and 1 in the Regional Champion Finals and won the Region last weekend. Any reflection on the team in the post season leading into the 4A States – it seems that the team is peaking at the right moment.

Fisher: "We certainly are wrestling at a much higher level than we have earlier in the season. We need to move into the state tournament with an improvement mindset. If we are content with our performance at Regionals, we will not reach our ultimate peak."

Q: A few State teams have entered the 4A State Champions with many participants. It seems they all can score points - any thoughts on the 2020 State field?

Fisher: "It’s going to be a dogfight. There is parity in the top teams. If we wrestle to our ability, we will be in the mix."

Q: Since 2014 Fauquier have consistently finished a top of the leader board in the state and have consistently advanced wrestlers onto the state finals. Once again does team Fauquier have the talent to get wrestlers into the 2020 State Finals and is team Fauquier a contender?

Fisher: "I think we have done what we can as coaches. I think our schedule has provided us with the needed adversity. I think we have emphasized all the unseen things that play such a huge role in performance such as sleep/recovery, diet, mentality, etc. They have put themselves in a good position to be successful, it will come down to their desire and their willingness to prepare for this weekend."

The 2020 4A State C Championship is scheduled for Friday starting at 10AM as the complete schedule is listed below.
