Preview: 2018 4A Region C Wrestling Championships

As team Fauquier earns their 13th District Championships last week in a thriller come from behind victory expect for the reset button to be pushed as the Region Championships is the next post season event.

Team Fauquier has won seven Regional Championships since 2010 and have been crowned champions the past three-years. Team Fauquier won four straight Regional titles from 2010 to 2013 and came in second place behind Sherando in 2014.

With the make-up of fourteen teams within the 4A Region C classification and the first year of this new VHSL alignment, it is uncertain of the competition’s strength from foe teams.

8-Man v 16-Man Brackets
As 4A Region C Wrestling Championships will be held at Sherando HS expect to see only those wrestlers who qualified from districts to be slotted within an 8-Man bracket. In fact, this is the first time in the past 35 years that the Regional event will run an 8-Man wrestling bracket.

Historically the VHSL Regional wrestling tournaments has always been a make-up of a 16-Man bracket. With only two 4A Districts (Northwestern and Dulles) in Region C it’s no secret by now that the AD’s made these proposals without involving or getting input from the head wrestling coaches from the districts as only four wrestlers from each weight class will advance.

To suggest that the 4A Regions A and B Districts allowed for all in or full advancement of participants from their respective districts to Regional play seemed like a good thing for the sport of wrestling. To have the Northwestern and Dulles Districts to then eliminate competitors from Regional play as other Regions from the same classification do not, puts questions in fairness.

Since Northwestern and Dulles Districts only advanced top 4 for Region C Championships they will be using an 8-man bracket. Compare that to the other Regions in the 4A classifications who advance all participants and will be running a 16-Man bracket.

Top Region Seeds
Below is a review of the top three teams from the Northwestern and Dulles Districts. Here is the breakdown of the team’s top number one and number two seeds and the total number of participants to the Region C Championships.

As Fauquier earns the highest number one seeds with six, Loudoun Valley and Fauquier earns the most number one and two seeds with eight. James Wood would then stand as the team that has qualified and advanced the most wrestlers onto Regions with 12, Liberty advanced 11, as Fauquier and the remaining three top teams have 10 wrestlers entered in the Regional event.

Do not be surprised to see Fauquier and Liberty once again battling on Friday night to see who can advance the most wrestlers onto the 4A State Championship while trying to win the 2018 4A Region C Wrestling Championships. The more wrestlers that teams advance to the 4A State Championships most likely means they will be in the mix to bring home the 2018 Regional crown.

Keep an eye on
Gino Camarca, Ethan Jordan, Kyle Budd, Joe Del Gallo, Darryl Mayfield, Sam Fisher, Franco Camarca, and Tyler Raymond all have a number one and two seed at the Region C Championships for team Fauquier.

Gino Camarca, a sophomore and younger brother of Franco, has a 29-10 season record and was a 2018 District Champion and a Regional qualifier last year.

Jordan, a junior, has a season record of 19-8, was a 2018 District Champion and a Regional and 4A State Championships qualifier in 2017.

Budd currently has a season record of 24-9 and is a 3-time District Champion. He won the 4A State Championships in 2016 and took second place last season. Budd is ranked fifth in the VAWA All-Division Rankings.

Del Gallo has a season record as 29-6 and is a 2-time District Champ and a finalist and placed 4th at the 4A State Championships meet last year. He currently is ranked second in the VAWA All-Division Rankings at his weight class.

Fisher who currently is 33-3 for the season is a 2-time District Champ and won the Regions and the 4A State Championships as a Freshman last year. Fisher is the second ranked wrestler in the VAWA All-Division Rankings as he should have a clear path to the Region finals.

Camarca, one of the Falcons team leaders, has a 28-6 season record and also won the Conference, Regions, and the 4A State Championships as a Junior last year. Camarca currently is the second ranked wrestler in the VAWA All-Division Rankings and should be slated to be one of the top wrestlers out of the NW District.

Raymond (T-Man) also is a number one seed and has a current record of 31-7. Raymond is a 2-time District Champ and a 4A State qualifier last season. Raymond currently is ranked ninth in the VAWA All-Division Rankings.

Questions for Coach Fisher:
Q: Any thoughts on the Regions running an 8-Man bracket compared to the other Regions in the 4A classification hosting a 16-Man wrestling bracket – Is there an advantage the other 4A Regions have over ours?
Fisher: "In general, I prefer the qualification process via Districts, but it needs to be uniform across the 4A Division. In our current environment where each region decides the path to state qualification, I would prefer to give all of our guys one more week of preparation to best position them for state qualification. Alex, Nolan, Tommy and Eric did not get that opportunity, while others in the state did."

Q: Coming off a thriller 2018 District Championship how can team Fauquier get it done and bring home the Regional Crown for a fourth straight year?
Fisher: "Well we are certainly in the mix. We have been doing some fine tuning this week, and working individually with guys to prepare them for Friday’s challenges. I am excited to see if our guys will rise to the challenge once again."

Q: The most Regional Champions Fauquier has had is four (2017, 2014, 2011, 2010, and 2009) any thoughts on if Fauquier can match this record?
Fisher: "Statistically speaking, the opportunity is there. With only two districts in our Region as opposed to four in all previous years, it would appear that the Region is only half as strong as those in years past. But with that said, as with our District, two of the top teams in the state in 4A are in Region C, whereas each of the other Regions only contain one top state program per Region."

The 2018 4A Region C Championship is scheduled for Friday starting at 1PM as the complete schedule is listed below.
