The Fauquier High School wrestling team is well into its season and is continuing its success where they left off from last year (3rd in the States). With much of the remaining matches now weekend dates the team is preparing for the post season and a run for the state tournament. I am simply writing to the Fauquier wrestling community to highlight their season up to this point, to review what is forthcoming, and to invite all to a Wrestling team social. The word here folks is that the Falcons are on a roll!!!

The Wrestling Room:
First, let me simply state what a great face lift the wrestling room has had. This restoration took place this past fall and it now meets the same standards as the other two high schools’ wrestling rooms in the county. The wrestling room was upgraded with a new floor, a new paint job, new electrical work, new mats on the wall, and a few other small and minor details. All this hard work was done by Jeff Budd, Stum, Jack Raines, Bruce Kerns, and Paul Winters. It truly is a clean and safe environment for the kids to wrestle in. And as I write, the wrestling program and the Fauquier Sports Foundation continue to make upgrades to the room and have already ordered two smaller mat sections to replace the oversized mats sections that are presently being used.

Season Overview:
On Dec 4th Fauquier opened the season at Skyline Elite Opener as Fauquier Finished 3rd behind Colonial Forge and Grundy, two of the power house teams in the state. The Falcons had two wrestlers that finished 1st (Greg Flournoy and Seth Baker). This was a great start to the season as Coach Fisher used this to spring board to work with the kids on their mistakes.

2nd Place - NOVA Classic at Fairfax H.S
On Dec. 10-11th Fauquier then traveled to NOVA Classic at Fairfax HS. Out of 32 teams in this event the Falcons finished 2nd right behind AAA Westfield. Fauquier really wrestled tough and had three wrestlers that finished in 1st place (Greg Flournoy, Van Grimes, and Jake Fahlfeder).

Then on Dec. 18-19th the team traveled to Delaware University to compete in the Beast of the East. This tournament year in and year out is rated as one of the top 5 tournaments in the country. In addition, this is an event that hosts well over 100 plus schools each year. Fauquier did not have any kids that placed and finished 40th, not bad out of 125 teams considerable higher than last year 58th finish. Standout wrestlers were 171 Jake Fahlfeder winning 5 matches in a row in the consolations and were one match from placing. Also 112 Bennett Payne was 2 matches away from placing at the tournament. Although Fauquier did not have any kids that placed the team wrestled great, not bad out of 125 teams.

The team then traveled to the Trojan Duals at New Kent H.S. on Dec. 23rd and finished 2nd behind Matoaca H.S. This was a 10 team 2 pool dual tournament. What was special about this event was that the Falcons competed against New Kent H.S. which is ranked 4th in the AA states right behind us and won the match handedly. The following wresters went undefeated at this event: 119-Bennett Payne, 130-Tyler Budd, 135-Greg Flournoy, 140-Landon Dean, 145-Seth Baker, 171-Jake Fahlfeder.

   Senior Recognition
   1st Place - Falcon Duals Fauquier H.S.
2nd Place - VA Duals American Div.
Then on Dec. 28th Fauquier hosted their annual tournament and only home match of the season, The Falcon Duals. The wrestling team had four dual matches and brought home the 1st place trophy. Many of the Falcons also earned the gold medal as well.

Traveling to Robinson H.S. on Jan. 5th for a Tri match with Robinson and Chantilly this event was sort of a homecoming match for Coach Fisher as he was up against his old team that he assisted as a coach for 12 years. The Falcons hammered Chantilly conveniently but lost a very close match to Robinson. It was nice to see the 3rd ranked team in AAA (Robinson) go against Fauquier, whom is also ranked 3rd in AA.

Finally and this past weekend on Jan. 7-8th the Falcons wrestled at the Virginia Duals in the America Div. Again, this is another top 5 wrestling tournament in the country and the team made it to the finals and took second. For the past 6 years the team has traveled to the Virginia Duals, Fauquier had never made it to the Semi-finals or the Finals. Having competed in the National Div. for many years, the Falcons now made a run in the America Div. and the team finally had a break out tournament reaching the finals and taking second. This truly is a huge accomplishment for the team and the kids. The following wresters went undefeated through these 4 matches: 119-Bennett Payne, 135-Greg Flournoy, 140-Landon Dean, 152-Van Grimes.

So after competing in 5 tournaments thus far this season, the Falcons have brought home a team trophy in 4 of those events. That alone is quite awesome.
