The Warhawks wrestling team is midway through its season and have much to talk about as they just have come off a great weekend competing in the Virginia Challenge in Hampton, VA. Better known as the Elementary & Middle School State Championships the Fauquier team sent 16 wrestlers to this event and had 10 wrestlers place. The goal of any event is to win, but bringing this many kids to a state-wide event speaks volumes. It’s not always about the quantity but the quality as success of these kids was evident.

In the 7th-8th grade division the team finished 10th out of 43 teams and had four wrestlers that placed 2nd, two wrestlers that finished 4th, and another finishing 6th. In the 5th-6th group the kids had finished 3rd at a team out of 31 teams and had three wrestlers that finished 2nd, one 4th, and two wrestlers that placed 6th.

As the team competes in the Beltway league, the Warhawks presently post a 4 and 4 record. Competing with teams in Virginia and Maryland there are just a few dates that are left. Below is the remaining schedule.

02/15/2011 - 9:00 am – 4 matches @ Fauquier HS, Warrenton, VA
02/202011 - 10:00 am – 1 match @ Episcopal HS, Alexandria, VA
03/06/2011 - CAWL finals @ Hayfield HS, Alexandria, VA

After the Warhawks complete their regular season, all the league teams come together for an end-of-the year tournament called Capital Area Wrestling League Finals. This tournament continues to be one of the toughest and oldest youth wrestling events in Virginia and Maryland dating back to the 60’s. We wish the Warhawks the best of luck with the rest of the season.

Wrestling Room Update: A big thanks to the Fauquier Sports Foundation and Fauquier High School for purchasing additional mats for the wrestling room. Three new small mat sections have recently been purchased, shipped and now been placed in the Fauquier wrestling room which makes the wrestling surface the same color and enable more wrestling space to be used with wrestling circles.

MAWA: As the wrestling season comes to end in March please be advised that the Fauquier wrestling team will continue hosting practice through the spring. One of our biggest fundraisers is in March (the MAWA tournament on the 19-20th) so the coaches will keep the wrestling room open through this time and beyond. All teams (High School, Beltway, and Federation) wrestlers will be encouraged to participate in this event. Also we will need help during this event. Many volunteers will be needed.
