Preview: of the 2018 4A State Championships

For many years Fauquier travelled to the Salem Civic Center, Salem VA for the State Championships. This year instead the drive down to Southwest Virginia the 4A and 3A State Championships will be taking place in Portsmouth, VA at Churchland High School.

Salam Civic Center will host the 1A and 2A wrestling States as Oscar Smith HS in Chesapeake VA will host the 5A and 6A State Championships. But not going to discuss these state classifications rather just the 4A State Championships.

The 3-day State meet with a 12-Man bracket which had the make-up in 2017 will also be changed to a 2-day event with a 16-Man bracket for the 2018 Championships. The 4A State is made up of four Regions (A, B, C, and D) and at each weight class, each region qualified four wrestlers making up a 16-man field.

For team Fauquier everyone will have a first-round bout. Fauquier will aligned with five number one seeds, two number two seeds, two third seeds, and one fourth seed. Based on how teams finished up at the Region wrestlers will carry that same placement over to the 16-Man bracket.

With four Regions the state brackets will have four number 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds as the number 1 and 4 seeds will be pairs up together and the 2 and 3 seeds respectively will have bouts during the first round of States.

Of the five top teams entering the States Championships Eastern View has advanced the most wresters with 12, where the other four schools are equal with 10 wrestlers each.

As Great Bridge has the most number one and two seeds with 10, Eastern View has 8 and Fauquier and the two other teams Liberty and Amherst has 7. With Great Bridge and Eastern View having the highest number of seeds do not be surprised to see both teams in control of the leader board after the first round of wrestling on Friday.

Keep an eye on:
Ethan Jordon, Kyle Budd, Joe Del Gallo, Sam Fisher, and Tyler Raymond all won the region last week and are the No. 1 seeds.

Gino Camarca, a sophomore and younger brother of Franco, has a 30-7 season record and currently has a 58-32 career record. Gino was a 2018 District Champion, 2018 second place finish at Regions and was a Regional place-winner last year.

Jordon, a junior, has a season record of 22-8 and currently has a 58-32 career record. Ethan was a 2018 District Champion, 2018 Region Champion and a 4A State Championships qualifier in 2017.

Budd currently has a season record of 29-6 and currently has a 135-40 career record. Kyle is a 3-time District Champion and a 2-time Region Champion. He won the 4A State Championships in 2016 and took second place last season and in 2015. Budd is ranked fifth in the VAWA All-Division Rankings.

Del Gallo has a season record as 32-6 and currently has a 92-54 career record. Joe is a 2-time District Champ, 2018 Region Champ and a finalist and placed 4th at the 4A State Championships meet last year. He currently is ranked second in the VAWA All-Division Rankings at his weight class.

Fisher who currently is 37-3 for the season and currently has a 79-12 career record. Sam is a 2-time District Champ and 2-time Region Champ and the 4A State Championships as a Freshman last year. Fisher is the second ranked wrestler in the VAWA All-Division Rankings.

Camarca, one of the Falcons team leaders, has a 30-7 season record and currently has a 128-44 career record. Franco also won the Conference, Regions, and the 4A State Championships as a Junior last year. Camarca currently is the second ranked wrestler in the VAWA All-Division Rankings and should be slated to be one of the top wrestlers out of the Region C.

Raymond (T-Man) also is a number one seed and has a current record of 35-7. Raymond is a 2-time District Champ and a 4A State qualifier last season. Raymond currently is ranked ninth in the VAWA All-Division Rankings.

Questions for Coach Fisher:
Q: Reflecting on the Ten Facts that was written about the Fauquier County Dominates 4A Region, how strong is the Northwestern District heading into the State Championship?

Fisher: "It is certainly by far the toughest District and Region in the state. Although that makes the path to the State Championships tougher, I believe the tougher competition the last 2 weeks will help us in the battles that we will have this weekend."

Q: The Falcons went 5 and 2 in the Regional Final and took a 2nd place Region last week in Sherando HS. any reflection on the team in the post season leading into the 4A States – it seems that the team is peaking at the right moment.

Fisher: "Yeah, I thought we wrestled really well at Regionals. In fact, I thought we wrestled better at Regionals than at Districts. Saw improvement in everyone either through all of their matches or in specific positions that we are working on. We continue to get healthier also. Last week we had some guys that really were struggling with sickness, and a little bit again at Regions, but it was overall better. We were pretty banged up going into Districts with some lingering shoulder, ankle and knee issues, and we got banged up a little more at Districts, but we were a little healthier at Regionals, and are continuing on the healthy upswing."

Q: The past four years the VHSL have used an 8-Man State Bracket, with four Regions that make-up of States now we are back to a 16-Man bracket. It seems more points can be obtained – any thoughts?

Fisher: "Yeah, there are a lot of points to be earned. Those points can be earned going straight to the finals and individual titles and also making runs back through the consolations. In certain situations, a wrestler can earn more points in the consolations than can be earned in the championships. Great Bridge squeaked by us last year because of their effort in the consolations. We are bringing 10 guys and I believe all 10 are capable of scoring points for us. A full team effort will be required for us to bring home a title this year."

Q: The past three years team Fauquier have finished top two in the state and have advanced four wrestlers onto the state finals. Once again does team Fauquier have the talent to get wrestlers into the State Finals in 2018?

Fisher: "I believe so. I think we are positioned to put that many or even more guys in the state finals this year, I am excited for the guys in that they have put in the time and effort to provide themselves that opportunity. But nothing is guaranteed, and we will work this week to make sure we are prepared to make the most of our ability."
