The Fauquier Wrestling team participated in the 1st Annual Coach "K" Invitational on Saturday, January 30th. The last in-season event for the Falcons before post season play begins had two teams as Co-Champions with 189 points at days end.

The event was a 16 man double elimination tournament but was modified in the first two rounds as the losing wrestlers of the championship bracket could only wrestle back to get 5th place. The Semi-Final losing wrestlers dropped and paired to wrestle for a 3rd or 4th placement.

Through the first two rounds Robinson, Brentsville, Mountain View, Handley, and Fauquier all were among the top leader board but it was not until after the Semi-Finals round where Fauquier and Robinson – out of Fairfax - separated themselves from the rest of field.

Leading up to the Semi-Finals Fauquier had eight wrestlers that made it to the Semi-finals. Once this round concluded team Fauquier pushed six through to the finals - where Robinson HS who also wrestled tough had landed five kids.

It may have seen like both teams Fauquier and Robinson may have left something on the mat on this day or the “What. . . If” as all one team needed was a half point to take the lead. But as Fauquier went three and three in the Final Champions and five and six in the final placement rounds over all that just may have been the case.

Not sure if a tie at the end of a six rounds of wrestling happens often but can say like others it happened. Looking closer at the had-to-head matches between Fauquier and Robinson one may say why did the Falcons walk out of the gym with the first place trophy in hand – team Fauquier went 4 and 3 verse Robinson.

Team Fauquier had three wrestlers that won gold: 106 lbs Kyle Budd, 152 lbs Franco Camarca, and 160 lbs Garrett Tingen.

Questions for Coach Fisher:
Q: Have you ever been in a situation where you were Co-Champions of a wrestling tournament? But got to believe if you were going to be Co, it sits alright that it’s with Robinson.
Coach Fisher: "That was definitely a first for us. We have tied for second or third before, but never 1st. It made it exciting and as we have a great relationship with Robinson and they are a very solid team, it was a fun finish."

Q: Any “What…If” that could have gone differently?
Coach Fisher: "Well, it is always easy to do the shoulda, coulda, woulda game, and every one of our guys had opportunity to score one more team point, but in general, we wrestled well, got some good timely competition and saw some good “take aways” that we can work on going into the post season."

Q: Kyle Budd, Franco Camarca, and Garrett Tingen looking strong any reflections?
Coach Fisher: "Kyle continues to consistently improve. I think he is looking very solid going into the post season. Franco finally believes what we all knew. That he is one of the best wrestlers in the state at any division. That confidence was evident Saturday and he got to where we expect him to be – top of the podium. Garrett continues to do an amazing job and as always is entertaining to watch. His finals match was against one of the other top wrestlers in Virginia and even though this was the fourth time that Garrett has faced Dylan Gumaer this season, he was able to score a major decision."

Q: Any take a ways from this event? How does a tournament like this prepare for the post season?
Coach Fisher: "I was really happy with the late addition of Robinson to the tournament. After missing the USMC challenge, It was great having additional high level competition to help with post season preparation. We have some specific individual take-aways, but as a team I see us starting to come together and wrestle with some excitement."

Q: Districts in next week – is the 2016 Falcons ready for a repeat at all three post season events?
Coach Fisher: "I continually try to impress upon the guys that it is a tremendous opportunity that we have that we can be in a position to compete for the titles at each of these post season events. Considering that we lost half of our starters last year due to graduation, and we still can be competitive this year, says a lot about the quality of our returners and freshman. Nothing is guaranteed, and we have an uphill road to climb, but the guys should be grateful for the opportunity and make the most of it."

The Next event: The Falcons will be traveling to Liberty HS this Friday, January 5th for the start of the post season – Conference 22 tournament. More details will come later.
