On Dec. 28th and 29th the Fauquier Wrestling team traveled to Cantonsville Maryland for the 9th Annual Mount Mat Madness wrestling tournament. This was a 26 team event as wrestlers competed individual in a standard 32 man brackets as the Falcons battled in this two day tournament.
A lot of the schools at this event were private and within the Maryland metro area all having high level national ranked wresters making this once again a tuff tournament for the Falcon squad. Although Fauquier ended up in 16th place with 85pts earned, Coach Fisher’s young squad was again exposed to some matches that tested his team as the improvements continue. More than that only entering 11 of the 14 weight classes and keeping some of his starters home could have made a different in the final standings.
Individual Highlights: Sophomore 132lbs Matt Raines went 3-1 and made it to the MMM ix finals but ended up with a sliver. Matt had a bye first round and earned three wins to get to the finals. Senior 182lbs Max Strum went 4-2 where he made it to the Semi-Finals but fell short as he battled back for a 4th place finish. Other notable performances came from senior 152lbs Ben Brady went 3-3 where he took a 6th place finish. Below is the results of Fauquier Falcons by rounds.
What’s Next: The Falcons will look to hit the mat over the next few days by having a dual match with Warren Co. HS. in Front Royal on Jan. 2nd as they then will head to Mayhem at Millbrook on Jan. 4th and 5th at Millbook HS. This will be an individual bracketed tournament as wrestlers advance forward through the champion rounds if they win. The following week the Falcons then will have a tri-district match with Kettle Run HS. and Brentsville HS. on Jan. 9th.
