To have Fauquier enter and compete in a tournament such as the Mayhem at Millbrook one could say that Fauquier did get a little mayhem on their opponents just like those All State commercials that we see on TV. With 6 finalists and 11 wrestlers placing in this individual team tournament, once again Fauquier guaranties to be on top of the field which brought teams in from all corners of Our State. Fauquier won the Mayhem at Millbrook tourney by earning 222.5 points over Millbrook 202, Salem 156.5, JW Robinson 143.5 (last year’s AAA state champion team), Granby 128.5, and Centreville 111.

   113 Matt Raines

1st Place - Mayhem

As the 16-man bracket tournament became public and of the 12 wrestlers that Fauquier brought to this competition, 9 out of those 12 wrestlers that Fauquier entered were granted with a bye first round. In short this meant that Fauquier had 9 wrestlers that advanced onto round two without a match. In some cases this may be good and you see this occurring at times with the top seeded wrestlers in the weight classes. But to have 9 byes had many Fauquier Nation people scratching their chins wondering how this could be. So through the first round Fauquier only had 4 matches where they went 4-1.

To look even deeper into the scoring of a bye, if you are granted a bye then the team and the wrestler loses out on earning any additional bonus points or team points; such as winning by a pin or tech fall a team get an additional +2 or +1 team points. Did I mention that the Falcons had to get a little mayhem to make up the possible points lost with having 9 byes?

   126 Bennett Payne

1st Place - Mayhem

As the champion rounds one and two came to a close on the first day of a two day tournament, the Falcons had proven to all that they came ready to win as the team pushed 9 wrestlers through and into the Semi-Finals. That alone brought in extra team points that found team Fauquier on top of the leader board. In most tournaments if you reach the semi-finals than you will obtain placement points as a wrestler can get no lower than sixth place. Since the Falcons were at a state of mayhem let me say that a sixth place finish was not on the minds of these wrestlers; simply reaching the finals.

As day two started with the Semi-Finals, and of those 9 wrestlers that were in the semi-finals which had matches this round, 6 Falcons came off the mat with their hand being raised. Matt Raines won 18-2 over Joseph Crawford (SAL), Bennett Payne won by pin over Kevin Williams (EVW), Chuck Hilleary won by pin over Tony Pritt (EVW), Tyler Budd won by pin over Jared Swan (SAL), Max Strum won by pin over James Stephens (SAL), and Evan Oddenino won 3-2 OT over Logan Turner (CVS). That alone was enough to extend the team point margin as Fauquier never looked back. Simply by putting 6 wrestlers in the finals of a 14 weight classes odds are that this is going to render enough team points to be in the lead. But Millbrook High School, the host school of the event, also had some outstanding wrestlers as they also pushed 6 wrestlers through to the finals and were right on the heels of Fauquier going into the final rounds.

   138 Tyler Budd

1st Place - Mayhem

Whenever a wrestler makes it to the final of any tournament it’s a special moment as they should be considered the best in that weight class of 16 wrestlers. Even though this tourney Mayhem at Millbrook had some tough wrestlers in each weight class the Falcon once again had their guns ready to battle to be on top of the podium. Team Fauquier ending up going 3-3 as Matt Raines, Bennett Payne, and Tyler Budd all won their respective weight classes and earned the points to obtain the first place trophy.

This is the first time the Falcons have wrestled in the Mayhem at Millbrook tourney any thoughts with the toughness of this tournament? Do you feel the team was tested this weekend?
Coach Fisher: I thought the tournament had a good mix of teams, with some really good individuals. It would have been nice though to have La Plata in the mix. I thought the team was adequately tested.

Matt Raines winning three of this season five tournaments thus far, can you reflect on his success this freshman has had?
Coach Fisher: Matt is doing a fantastic job. He is always seeking the hardest matches in the practice room and in competition, and that has contributed to his success.

Clearly we are past midway through the season, how will you continue to keep this team wrestling at a high level?
Coach Fisher: We will continue doing what we always do. Work hard in practice, evaluate and improve on our weaknesses and stay disciplined in the activities that happen away from the mat such as proper weight management and academics.

This is now the fourth of five wrestling tournaments this season at which the flying Falcons have managed to capture and take home the first place team trophy. Over half way through this season and having this type of success one must realize that it takes a team effort to reach these heights. The team must be buying into what Coach Fisher is selling. If Mayhem truly is classified as havoc than Coach Fisher has been able to tap into each wrestler’s traits so they completely understand how to confuse their opponent on the mat as the winning ways continue for this team.
