VHSL Rolls out Guidelines for Interscholastic Plans

Warrenton, VA: In a normal school year, the month of November would be a time period when the Fall high school sports season would be finishing up and the winter season would begin.

No State Football Championship yet and we still need to wait longer for the winter sports season to begin.

While most school systems today have already moved into the 2nd marking quarter of the 2020-21 school year, there has been no VHSL athletic sanctioned events this school year.

In late July when most school systems were making plans to head back to school virtually or hybrid, the VHSL voted and approved the adjustment to the 2020-21 sports season.

This approve Interscholastic plan has the three seasons condensed from December 14 to the end of June.

Season 1 (Winter) December 14 to February 20 (First Contest Date–December 28): Basketball, Gymnastics, Indoor Track, Swim/Dive, Wrestling.

Season 2 (Fall) February 15 to May 1 (First Contest Date–March 1): Cheer, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Volleyball.

Season 3 (Spring) April 12 to June 26 (First Contest Date–April 26): Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field.

Just so you know, wrestling falls into Season 1 and is slated to begin practices next month.

Yes, December 14th is just a few weeks away as Virginia high school athletes will be getting ready for practice and sanctioned events.

In addition, for wrestling, VHSL has also adjusted its regular season contest from 12 events down to just 8 contest events.

Many other wrestling rule changes also were put into place - one coach in the corner and the first period time decreases by 1 minute (1-2-2 periods).

The wrestling season will also run through February 20, 2021 and the State Championship.

VHSL Guidelines for Return to Participation:

Just last week October 30th the VHSL also made public the Guidelines for Return to Participation.

This 39-page document outlined the social distancing essential procedures for all the Interscholastic sport programs. Information about wrestling can be found on page 26 - VHSL Guidelines for Return to Participation

While we creep closer to the start of Season 1, across the state of Virginia many school boards will still have to weigh-in and decide whether to have students participate.

Currently some school systems in Virginia plan to continue to be virtual into 2021. It is unknown if virtual school systems will allow students to enter a school building to participate.
